    August 22, 2009

    Welcome back for Fall 2009!

    Temporary Printing Solution

Due to a software issue on our primary print server, we have setup a temporary print server: eces-print

To ease this transition, we have setup a script which should automatically add all available printers to your Windows Roaming Profile.

However, a number of things may go wrong while this script is running.

If you find you do not have the printer you want, follow these directions:

Printing in the ECE Computer Labs

Please be patient with our temporary solution. We hope to have a permanent solution up ASAP.

New Account Creation and Password Reset Procedures

We have a new site for Self Account Creation and Password Changes on ECES.

To create your account and/or reset your password on ECES, you can visit:

    sac.colorado.edu

An identikey and identikey password is required.

As always, if that doesn't work for you, e-mail ecehelp@colorado.edu.

ECES "Z" Drive Available Outside of Labs

You are now able to mount your "Z" drive on ECES -- your home directory -- from outside of the ECEE Undergrad Labs.

If you are on-campus, you can simply choose "Map Network Drive" from a Windows machine or "Connect to Server" on a Mac.

From off-campus, you can use the CU VPN to gain similar access.

    See below for details:

    ECES SMB Connect

    Just a few notices:

New Logic, DSP, Communications, Embedded Hybrid Systems Lab

ECEE 1B79 has been remodeled to host 12 workstations which will be used for Logic Lab, the DSP Lab, the Communications Lab, and the Embedded Hybrid Systems Lab.

Please respect the lab schedule which will be posted on the lab door.

New Workstations in Circuits and Embedded Systems Design/Real Time Labs

HP Z400 intel i7-based workstations have been installed in the Circuits Lab in ECEE 281 and in the Embedded Systems Design/Real-time lab in ECEE 2B39.

    New ECES-Shell

eces-shell.colorado.edu has been upgraded to new hardware and the latest version of Redhat Enterprise Linux.

If you find a required piece of software missing or broken, please e-mail ecehelp@colorado.edu.

    Power Saving

We have setup many of the lab computers to go to Standby mode after 10 - 45 minutes of inactivity.

To wake a computer in Standby mode, simply press a button on the keyboard.

If that fails, you can press the power button on the computer to wake it up.

If that fails, it is probably not in Standby. Try turning it on and/or plugging it in -- not in that order.

    Broken Equipment

    Please report all broken equipment.

Please DO NOT attempt to fix broken equipment yourself.

Please DO NOT trade the broken equipment at your lab bench for working equipment at some other lab bench.

    Report broken equipment to:

    1. ecehelp@colorado.edu

    2. Wayne Gardner

    3. Matt Lessem

    4. Anyone hanging out in ECEE 1B10A (behind E-Stores)

    Thanks.

    Have a good semester.

    Older ECES News

What is the ECES Student Server?

The ECES Student Server is a Unix computer owned and operated by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The ECES Student Server is generally accessed in two ways:

As a Windows Server From Within ECE Computer Labs
ECES is the Primary Domain Controller for the Windows 2000 computers in the ECE computer labs. This means it validates logins and passwords to allow users to login to the client computers in the labs, and it hosts users' home directories, the Z: drive, on the client computers.

As a Unix Server From Anywhere
ECES is accessible from anywhere on the internet, including the ECE computer labs, as eces.colorado.edu. As a Unix server, eces.colorado.edu is accessilbe via SSH. File transfers can be performed via SCP. E-mail services are available via IMAP SSL and POP SSL or on the web at eces.colorado.edu/webmail. And, as evidenced by this page, you can access ECES web pages at eces.colorado.edu.

Why would I need an account on the ECES Student Server?

Anyone currently registered for a course which requires use of an ECE computer lab must obtain an ECES account.

An ECES account login and password is required to access any computer in an ECE computer lab. Your ECES account will also provide you with a place to store data while working in the ECE computer labs and will provide you with access to this data from inside and outside of the labs.

An ECES account login and password is also required to access the computers in the ECE Student Resource Center.

Who can get an account on the ECES Student Server?

University of Colorado Undergraduates majoring in ECE, graduate students in the ECE Department, and ECE Faculty are all elligible to maintain an account on the ECES Student Server for the duration of their affiliation with the department.

Additionally, any students registered for a CU or CU Continuing Education course requiring them to use an ECE computer lab are eligible to maintain an account on the ECES Student Server for the durration of their enrollment in that course.

How do I get and use an account on the ECES Student Server?

If you are an ECE undergraduate or graduate student or are currently registered for a course which uses an ECE computer lab, please refer to the ECES Policies page and the Getting Started page to find out about creating and using your ECES account.
